Black AIDS Institute Joins Consumers for Quality Care Coalition

WASHINGTON – Consumers for Quality Care (CQC), an organization dedicated to ensuring that patients – and their right to affordable, quality care – remain at the forefront of the health care debate, is pleased to announce that the Black AIDS Institute has joined its coalition.

“We are thrilled to have the Black AIDS Institute join CQC as a new partner. As the only Black HIV/AIDS think tank, the Institute is a respected leader on health and wellbeing issues affecting the Black community,” said the Honorable Donna Christensen, CQC and BAI board member, physician and former Member of Congress. “The Institute works to raise awareness and prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS and now provides access to treatment for African Americans and all residents in the communities where they are located. CQC is excited to add the Institute’s perspective and energy to our coalition as we work together to address health disparities and the health care concerns of all consumers.”

“CQC has been working tirelessly to amplify consumer voices and show policy makers the need for quality and affordable care. We are excited to join this diverse coalition and work together to ensure the needs of African Americans affected by HIV and AIDS are heard and addressed,” said Raniyah Copeland, President and CEO of the Black AIDS Institute.

The Black AIDS Institute joins CQC and 13 other groups, including the Black Women’s Health Imperative and Autism Speaks, in advocating for the needs and rights of health care consumers.

Consumers for Quality Care (CQC) is a coalition of advocates and former policy makers working to provide a voice for patients in the health care debate as they demand better care. CQC is led by a board of directors that includes the Honorable Donna Christensen, physician and former Member of Congress; Jim Manley, former senior advisor to Senators Edward Kennedy and Harry Reid; Scott Mulhauser, founder of Aperture Strategies and former senior advisor to the Senate Finance Committee and Vice President Joe Biden; and Jason Resendez, community advocate and Executive Director of the LatinosAgainstAlzheimer’s Network and Coalition.

Founded in May of 1999, the Black AIDS Institute (BAI) is the only national HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on Black people. The Institute’s mission is to stop the AIDS epidemic in Black communities by engaging and mobilizing Black leaders, institutions, and individuals, in efforts to confront HIV.
